The ISPP Network investigated the links between collective identity and participation in socio-political activity at various levels in the context of migration, globalization and - in particular- the forces shaping an enlarged Europe. The focus was on how people identify themselves at multiple levels of social inclusiveness (the local, regional, national and European levels, but also ethnic and socio-economic categories) and act accordingly. The wider goal was to understand better how the processes of collective identity determine socio-political participation in a changing Europe undergoing political and economic integration.

This multi-disciplinary network brought together researchers from a number of academic disciplines, including social psychology, sociology, political science and cultural studies. Three international workshops were organised, on the themes of 1) Collective Identities, Protest Participation and Empowerment (2005), 2) Collective Identities in a Uniting Europe (2006) and 3) Collective Identities and Socio-Political Participation (2007).
