HANS-JOERG TRENZ - RESEARCH PROFESSOR

Hans-Jörg Trenz is research professor at ARENA, and attained his habilitation at Humboldt University Berlin and a PhD in social and political sciences at the European University Institute in Florence. His main research interests are in the areas of media, communication and public sphere, civil society, European civilization and identity, migration and ethnic minorities, cultural and political sociology, social and political theory, democracy and constitutionalism in the European Union. He was formerly involved in the research framework programme "Multi-level governance" financed by the German Research Council DFG (1997-2001), in the post-graduate school "The New Europe" (Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität Berlin 2001-2003) and in the FP5 project Civil Society and Governance in Europe (Civgov 2003-2005). He is currently co-coordinating the WP "civil society and the public sphere" within the 5-year EU Commission funded project Reconstituting Democracy in the European Union (RECON:2007-11) and a European Science Foundation project on "Building the EU's social constituency", which includes four partner institutions from Spain, the UK, Germany and Norway. He is also a member of the EU FP6 network project CONNEX.
